Tile Calculator
Use this tile calculator to estimate how many tiles you need for floors, walls, showers, and backsplashes. It also calculates grout and thinset quantities based on tile size and joint width. Adjust for pattern waste, tile cost, and get a complete material list before you visit the tile shop.

Formula:
Tiles = Area ÷ ((TL + Joint) × (TW + Joint)) × (1 + Waste)
Assumptions:
- Grout estimate based on tile size and joint width
- Thinset: ~50 lbs per 60 sq ft average
- Tile count rounded up after waste factor
- Larger tiles need less grout per sq ft

What this tile calculator does
Use this tile calculator to estimate how many tiles you need for floors, walls, showers, and backsplashes. It also calculates grout and thinset quantities based on tile size and joint width. Adjust for pattern waste, tile cost, and get a complete material list before you visit the tile shop.
Material Tally calculators are built for planning conversations with suppliers, contractors, and family members before a project starts. They help you see the difference between exact math and practical buying quantities, including waste factors and rounded purchase units. The result should be treated as a strong planning estimate, then checked against product labels, supplier guidance, and local building requirements.
Best for
- Early material planning before visiting a supplier
- Comparing cost assumptions and waste factors
- Checking whether a project is small enough for bagged or boxed materials
- Creating a clearer shopping list before work begins
How to use the calculator
Enter the project length and width in feet.
Select a tile size or enter custom dimensions.
Choose the grout joint width based on the tile type and look you want.
Set a waste factor for cuts, breakage, pattern layout, and future repairs.
Review tile count, grout pounds, thinset bags, and optional cost.
How the math works
Tile count is the project area divided by the area of one tile (including the grout joint), then multiplied by 1 plus the waste factor. Grout is estimated based on tile size, joint width, and tile thickness using industry coverage tables. Thinset is estimated based on tile size — smaller tiles need a thinner bed, while larger tiles need more thinset to achieve full coverage.
Planning tips
Order tiles from the same dye lot. Even rectified tiles can have slight color variation between production runs.
For diagonal layouts or herringbone patterns, increase waste to 15% — the additional cuts use more material.
Buy extra tiles for future repairs. Matching a discontinued or batch-changed tile is nearly impossible once the project is done.
Full coverage under each tile is critical for floors and wet areas. Use the right trowel notch size for the tile dimensions.
