What this drywall calculator does
Use this drywall calculator to estimate the number of drywall sheets needed for walls and ceilings, along with joint compound, tape, and screws. Material Tally calculators are built for planning conversations with suppliers, contractors, and family members before a project starts. They help you see the difference between exact math and practical buying quantities, including waste factors and rounded purchase units. The result should be treated as a strong planning estimate, then checked against product labels, supplier guidance, and local building requirements.
Best for
- Early material planning before visiting a supplier
- Comparing cost assumptions and waste factors
- Checking whether a project is small enough for bagged or boxed materials
- Creating a clearer shopping list before work begins
How to use the calculator
Measure the length, width, and height of each wall in the room.
Choose a drywall sheet size that matches the orientation you plan to hang.
Set the waste factor to cover cutoffs, corners, openings, and damaged sheets.
Review the estimated sheets, joint compound pounds, tape feet, and screw pounds.
Add an optional cost per sheet to compare supplier prices before buying.
How the math works
The calculator adds the total wall area (perimeter times height) and the ceiling area (length times width), then divides by the sheet area to get sheets needed. Joint compound and tape are estimated based on total board area using industry standard coverage rates. Screw counts are estimated at roughly one screw per square foot of board. The waste percentage is added before the sheet count is rounded up to whole sheets.
Planning tips
Hang sheets horizontally on walls for stronger, easier-to-finish seams in standard 8-foot rooms.
Plan sheet layout before cutting. A few extra minutes of layout planning can save several sheets on complex rooms.
Use the longest sheets that fit the space to reduce horizontal joints and finishing work.
For ceilings, use 5/8-inch fire-rated drywall in attached garages and any code-required application.
