Paver Calculator

Use this paver calculator to estimate how many pavers you need for patios, walkways, driveways, and pool decks. It also calculates base gravel and bedding sand volumes so you can order everything at once. Choose a paver size, enter the project area, and adjust for pattern waste and cost.

How it's calculated

Formula:

Pavers = Area ÷ ((PL + Joint) × (PW + Joint))

Assumptions:

 • Paver count includes waste and joint spacing
 • Base gravel: Area × depth ÷ 27 = cubic yards
 • Bedding sand: Area × depth ÷ 27 = cubic yards
 • Paver count rounded up to whole pavers

These calculations provide planning estimates. Always verify with product specifications and professional guidance before purchasing materials.

What this paver calculator does

Use this paver calculator to estimate how many pavers you need for patios, walkways, driveways, and pool decks. It also calculates base gravel and bedding sand volumes so you can order everything at once. Choose a paver size, enter the project area, and adjust for pattern waste and cost.

Material Tally calculators are built for planning conversations with suppliers, contractors, and family members before a project starts. They help you see the difference between exact math and practical buying quantities, including waste factors and rounded purchase units. The result should be treated as a strong planning estimate, then checked against product labels, supplier guidance, and local building requirements.

Best for

 • Early material planning before visiting a supplier
 • Comparing cost assumptions and waste factors
 • Checking whether a project is small enough for bagged or boxed materials
 • Creating a clearer shopping list before work begins

How to use the calculator

01

Measure the project area length and width in feet.

02

Choose the paver size from common options or enter custom dimensions.

03

Enter the base gravel depth and bedding sand depth for base preparation.

04

Set a waste factor for cuts, patterns, breakage, and future repairs.

05

Review paver count, base cubic yards, sand cubic yards, and optional cost.

How the math works

Paver count is calculated by dividing the project area by the area of one paver (including the selected joint width), then multiplying by 1 plus the waste factor. Base gravel volume is the area times the base depth converted to feet, then divided by 27 to get cubic yards. Bedding sand uses a similar method with a 1-inch depth assumption. The calculator rounds up to whole pavers.

Planning tips

Always order extra pavers for cuts, pattern breaks, and future repairs. Matching a discontinued paver is difficult.

Base depth depends on use. Patios need about 4 inches of compacted base; driveways may need 6 to 8 inches.

Order pavers from the same dye lot to avoid color variation. Check batch numbers before accepting delivery.

Joint sand (polymeric or regular) should be estimated after the paver layout is confirmed. It depends on joint width and paver thickness.
